This Week in Tokyo – 20 December 2022

Welcome to ‘This Week in Tokyo’, a review of the Maction Planet week that was and a look ahead to what’s coming up in the city. Hosted by Mac, our Founder and Lead Guide, you can check out photos from our tours and read insights into our explorations as we get under the skin of the World’s Greatest Metropolis, and beyond! This week: The legendary Yayoi Kusama takes over Kanpai Planet!

Yayoi Kusama’s psychedelic use of colour, pattern and rythmn – across painting, collage, sculpture, performance art, installations and writing – has made her both a visionary and revolutionary and has stamped her name in art history.

Her most inocics works attract millions around the world for their pop art energy, and yes, their Instagrammability, but they encapsulate minimalism, surrealism, feminism and psychology.

Louis Vuitton has again teamed up with Kusama for a second collaboration, their first in 10 years, to be released in January 2023. This had led to a huge presence across the World’s Greatest Metropolis which we are showcasing in this week’s ‘This Week in Tokyo’.

The featured image is of Dover Street Market’s resident elephant among a bunch of colourful Kusama pumpkins.

Matsuya Ginza Department Store have dedicated their entire facade to the LV x YK collaboration.

Over near Tokyo Station, a skating rink decorated with Kusama Dots is open every day from 11:00 to 22:00 until 25 December.

This installation is set up along Gyoko-dori, which leads from Tokyo Station to the Imperial Palace, until 25 December. I snapped this shot with my back to Tokyo Station.

If you need to warm up, grab a drink from this Fish Trailer Cafe next to skating rink, with the same operating times,
