This Week in Tokyo – 2 May 2023
Welcome to ‘This Week in Tokyo’, a review of the Maction Planet week that was and a look ahead to what’s coming up in the city. Hosted by Mac, our Founder and Lead Guide, you can check out photos from our tours and read insights into our explorations as we get under the skin of the World’s Greatest Metropolis, and beyond! This week: Godzilla and Mario – together again for the first time; Sumo Training at Oshiogawa Beya; Sleepy Aibo; Umayabashikiwa Toilets and The Unicorn Gundam LIVES!
Featured image – Godzilla and Mario – together again for the first time: This iconic meeting of worlds could only occur in Shinjuku, as the Godzilla that permanently rules over Kabukicho from the Hotel Gracery lords it over a temporary Mario promoting The Super Mario Bros. Movie which came out in Japan on 28 April!
Sumo Training at Oshiogawa Beya: It is always an honour to witness Sumo Training, and that’s what my guests Julie Anne, Maneeb and I did on the morning of 27 April at Oshiogawa Beya.
Sleepy Aibo: We all need rest… even the world’s cutest robot dog! Aibo is clearly being worked hard by its masters at the Hyatt Centric hotel in Ginza!
Umayabashikiwa Toilets: Guests soon become obsessed with toilets in Tokyo. Many of our public toilets have interesting designs, like these happy faces of the Umayabashikiwa Toilets!
The Unicorn Gundam LIVES: The pandemic changed Tokyo in many ways, but thankfully DiverCity’s Unicorn Gundam survived and continues to reign over Odaiba. Check out that triumphant power pose!
