Cherry Blossom coverage at Yoyogi Park in Tokyo

This Week in Tokyo – 2 April 2019

The latest edition of This Week in Tokyo – a review of the Maction Planet week that was and a look ahead to what’s coming up in and beyond the city. Check out photos from our tours and read insights into our explorations as we get under the skin of the World’s Greatest Metropolis, and beyond. This week’s edition is hosted by Mac, our Founder and Lead Guide. This week: Maction Planet x Shochu Pro Hanami 2019; Sakura koi, CHANDON Blossom Lounge, Dressing the part and Peko-chan in Pink!

Featured image – Maction Planet x Shochu Pro Hanami 2019: This was the view straight up from the Baird Beer station at the Maction Planet x Shochu Pro Hanami 2019. We hit mankai (full bloom) right on the nose and the weather was perfect. Christopher Pellegrini served 12 of the country’s finest shochu and I poured draft craft beer with Julian from Baird Beer. Thank you to everyone who attended, especially those from overseas who plan their holidays around the event!

Koi and sakura at Sensoji

Sakura Koi: Cherry Blossom season really allows some iconic shots, such as this combination of koi enjoying hanami under one of the Somei Yoshino trees at Sensoji.

Chandon Blossom Lounge at Tokyo Midtown

CHANDON Blossom Lounge: Until April 14 you can enjoy the CHANDON Blossom Lounge at Tokyo Midtown. Food options have been supervised by the executive sous chef of The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo, and sparkling wine on hand courtesy of CHANDON.

Revellers enjoying hanami at Ueno Park in Tokyo

Dressing the part: Some people are into hanami, and some people are into hanami. We spotted this crew at Ueno Park on Friday at 14:00. It was clear they had been at it for some time. The crowd loved them and they loved the crowd – exactly what the world’s biggest party is all about!

Peko-chan, Fujiya mascot, in Sakura print kimono

Peko-chan in pink: We have featured Peko-chan before in This Week in Tokyo. The perennial 6-year old is a snappy dresser and her fashion choices are always on point. Now that the days are warming up, she is taking to the streets in this stylish Kimono patterned with sakura and ume.
